Mac OS Catalina Video YouTube Problems

A week ago (April 22, 2020), I upgraded my 2019 MacBook Pro to Mac OS Catalina 10.15.4 after resisting it for a long time. Why? Typically, whenever I have upgraded to a newer OS from Apple in the past three years, things have gone awry. With Covid-19 Coronavirus Shelter In Place (SIP), I guess I needed a break from my other activities and decided to go ahead and upgrade. Well, it didn’t exactly go well.

At first, all seemed to have upgraded fine. Then, three odd things started happening:

  1. In System Preferences, Software Update showed the red circle with a number ‘1’ in it indicating that there was an update pending.

  2. Videos stopped working. From any website. YouTube wouldn’t work. I had a conference call via Microsoft Teams and that didn’t work either. This was using Google Chrome. So, naturally, I tried Safari. Same results.

  3. No sound would play nor could I mute the sound or rather unmute it, that option just remained grayed out with a circle and a crossbar or hash going through it, icon wise.

I called up Apple Support and was connected to a rep in less than 5 minutes. He had me boot into safe mode by holding down the Shift key during boot and no luck. Problems still remained. Then, he had me clear the NVRAM by doing Option, Command, P + R keys. He also had me reset the SMC. This resolved problems #2 & #3 above but, not #1. For #1, the solution was a bit more involved. He had me re-install Mac OS through recovery mode. That seems to have resolved issue #1 above.
